Device Options

At Brunswick Secondary College (BSC) digital technology can provide significant benefits to students’ educational opportunities. Furthermore, the teaching of digital safety and responsible online behaviour is essential to the lives of students and is best taught in partnership between home and school.

Brunswick Secondary College has two digital device programs.

Program 1 - Microsoft Surface - BSC preferred devices

These devices are either purchased through the school's JBEducation portal, or an any Microsoft Surface Device purchased elsewhere.
Several different suitable devices for educational purposes were selected by the school based on durability and reputation. These are available from JBEducation. Please use the following code BRUNSWICKSC2024

Program 2 - Non Surface Models (BYOD)

Students can use personally selected devices providing they meet minimum requirements detailed below. This is not our preferred option as these devices may not have full access to software provided by the Department of Education and may have limited hardware support through the school.

Please note: If purchasing a device external to the school's JBEducation Portal, please investigate the warranty and accidental damage protection options available to you at purchase.

Setup of Devices

Devices purchased through the school's JBEducation Portal will be delivered to the school and setup by the IT team (for year 7 enrolments this will happen in week 1 of term 1). Devices not purchased via JBEducation should be presented to the IT to be connected to the school's network. This should happen in week 1 of term 1 for year 7 enrolments and as soon as convenient in other circumstances. Any data on Microsoft Surface devices will be lost during setup. Imaging and handling can take up to 3 Days and all devices will be returned to students in class.
Students will receive a welcome letter with their BSC credentials and guidance.

WARRANTY AND ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION (ADP) Click to Expand

ADP is an additional insurance policy which you can purchase via the supplier, it covers accidental damage to the device.
Current laws mandate that ADP can only be offered 4 days after purchase.
Damaged devices should be presented to IT for assessment, however you can do this yourself via Student IT Support Page
Families with ADP cover will have their devices repaired/replaced as per the respective PDS.
If you have home and contents insurance you check your policy for coverage and excess
If purchasing a Microsoft device we recommend purchasing Microsoft Surface Pro Complete for Student as it provides the most comprehensive cover. Please view all waranty options when purchasing.

How to prepare your device to have Wi-Fi and printer access:
Ensure the device is functioning correctly, and the student is comfortable using it.
Ensure there are no passwords which will prevent the student from using the computer or change its configuration (e.g., connecting to a wireless network).
Remove any software (e.g., games, VPN) which might be distracting.
Ensure the device has up-to-date antivirus software.
Ensure Antivirus is installed.
Label the device with the student’s name.
Ensure that all information has been backed up externally to ensure that no information is lost. Use of the schools OneDrive is recommended.

CLOUD COMPUTING Click to Expand

Students will be provided access to a range of Microsoft products including OneDrive and Teams which allows them to store content online.
It is recommended that students utilise OneDrive for their documents as, in the event of catastrophic failure, all work will be retrievable on demand.
The school will not engage in extensive data recovery when these cloud services are available to all students.

BYOD Usage Agreement (please fill out and return if you are not using a Surface device)

All parents and students are required to read, discuss, understand, accept and agree to abide by the terms of the Brunswick Secondary College ICT Acceptable Use Agreement in order to be granted and retain access to the school network (it is not necessary to sign this if you have already agreed via the enrolment process).
